The Lake District, which comprises 12 large lakes including Windermere – England’s longest lake makes the area a superb destination for kayaking and open canoeing activities, in fact definitely the best in the north west of England.
Kendal Mountaineering Services run kayaking sessions in all areas of the Lake District National Park. Kayaking involves paddling in a boat on your own. Our Kayaking sessions are run mainly on Windermere, Coniston Water, Ullswater and Derwentwater, although if you want to have your kayaking session elsewhere, let us know.
As with open canoeing, you can choose to have a half day session or go for a full day out and journey from one end of a lake to the other taking in points of interest and visiting islands along the way.
As part of your day out, you will be shown all sorts of fun things and games that you can do in a kayak and we will teach you the basic skills of how to handle a kayak and what to do if you capsize.
If you are keen enough, we may also teach you how to roll your kayak after you have capsized without getting out of the craft.
KMS can also provide guided river trips but in order to come on one of these you must have attended one of our basic flat water (lake) skills sessions first and have demonstrated competence in handling one of these craft.
KMS can find you suitable venues in the Lake District and kayaking is ideal as part of a package of day activities for groups, stag/hen parties or individuals.
Some equipment is provided as part of the session fee, this includes a helmet, wetsuit, cagoule & buoyancy aid, you’ll need to bring a pair of old trainers for your feet and a fleece pullover to wear next to your skin.
