Kendal Mountaineering Services has a proven track record in providing rock climbing courses in the Lake District, North Wales (Snowdonia) and Scotland.
KMS offers three levels of Rock Climbing course:
The Lake District is a fantastic venue for climbing. The main locations for Lake District rock climbing courses are Borrowdale with a number of superb climbing venues such as Shepherds Crag or Black Crag, Langdale with some excellent multi-pitch beginners’ climbs such as those on Upper Scout Crag or Middlefell
Buttress. Dow Crag near Coniston provides some harder multi-pitch rock climbs and there are also some excellent easy locations for rock climbing in the Ullswater Valley.
All of our rock climbing courses will be tailored to suit your ability and experience and we will aim to build on what knowledge and skills you already possess. You will be working with instructors who are MIA/MIC qualified and who have a great deal of experience in developing individual personal ability in the sport of rock climbing.
If you have never been climbing before and want to try out the sport for the first time, a beginners single pitch climbing session is for you. You will learn basic ropework techniques and how to move on rock. This is suitable for individuals or groups. These can be a half day session as part of a multi-activity day or a full day climbing session and may well be run in conjunction with an abseiling session. It is possible that you have learned how to climb at an indoor wall, so already know the basics of belaying and climbing and want to learn to lead outdoors. If so, our learning to lead climb courses are for you. These are run on a 1:2 instructor to client ratio and are carried out over two days. These courses can be run in The Lake District, North Wales or Scotland.
In a learning to lead climb course we will teach you the basics of anchor selection, how to place running belays (gear placements) using the appropriate equipment for the placement, how to construct anchors to belay your climbing partner and how to abseil safely from the crag if you need to retreat. You will also be taught the importance of climbing calls and belaying within sight/earshot of your second if at all possible and how to interpret guidebooks when deciding on what climb to do.
Finally, you may want a private guided multi-pitch climbing course with one of our qualified mountaineering instructors to tackle some of those Lake District classic climbs such as Little Chamonix on Shepherds Crag, Corvus on Raven Crag, Eliminate A on Dow or Kipling Groove on Gimmer Crag. Whatever climbs you do will based upon your previous climbing experience so as to make for an enjoyable course. Guided climbing is done on a 1:2 instructor to client ratio.
